The Beuford Franklin Edison (BFE) Media Center supports the BFE High School which is located in the poor, rural town of Mayo, Florida. After performing a SWOT analysis of the media center, our group developed the following strategic outcomes that would allow the center to overcome its weaknesses and threats by leveraging its opportunities and strengths:
Media Center instills in students a desire to become life-long learners.
Students utilize current technology and resources to acquire, evaluate, and create information.
The school library media center improves education and information seeking opportunities for the school community by providing access to technology, new and diverse ideas, and a healthy learning environment.
The school library media specialist will initiate collaborative information literacy and technology lessons in conjunction with content area curriculum.
Collection development in the school library media center reflects the diversity and changing needs of the students and faculty.
From these outcomes, we developed the following four strategic areas and an action plan to address each area:
Funding
Collection development
Collaboration
Technology
In summary, we believe the successful implementation of these action plans will allow the BFE media center to achieve its mission to “inspire our users to become motivated, active, responsible users of information in order to mold life-long learners and improve quality of life through diverse ideas, curriculum, and technology.”
